“On my first day in the Philippines, July 16, 1990, there was a massive earthquake in northern Luzon. In Baguio City, where I was going to be working, more than 2,000 people died as buildings collapsed. There are three main roads that lead to the mountainous city and it took a week to get one of them open. So the first time I saw Baguio, it was a disaster — all of the major hotels had collapsed and they were still digging bodies out of the rubble.

“In my science classes, we have lots of goofiness and laughter while still being very serious in exploring creation. Sometimes, the students can be amazingly silly and I just sit back, enjoy the entertainment, and make sure all is safe and nice in the world of my classroom.

“One thing I like about teaching high school is that you can treat them like adults. Rather than treating my students like children that I need to supervise and manage, I provide coffee and we have informal discussions and tell jokes.
